Sitting posture.

by German Ominetti
(Chino, CA United States)

Why is it that when I use a foot stool my lower back starts to hurt but when I play using regular sitting posture or rock style posture my back doesn't hurt?

Does it have to do with how high the foot stool is set or the height of the chair?

I can't figure it out. Hope you know the answer.

Thanks!

Hi German,

If you don't use the classical style all that often then your back muscles won't be used to that type of position and could hurt after a while.

Perhaps your muscles are conditioned to the sitting position of the other styles.

It's a similar situation with the height of the footstool. If your muscles aren't used to it they may hurt for a while until they adjust.

I would probably advise that you only play in this position for a short time then get up to stretch and loosen your muscles the minute they start to feel a little sore.

It shouldn't be long until your muscles start to adjust to this new position.

Also, check to see if you're too tense when playing in this position. Tension causes a lot of stress which ultimately leads to pain.

Hope this helps,

Trevor M.
