retirement wonders

by Bob A
(Knoxville, Tn. USA)

I didn't start guitar until I was 69 years old. I was looking for something that would challenge me in several ways, concentration being one of them.

I decided to buy a classical guitar and try the Suzuki course on my own. After about a year of that I slinked into book 2 and did not know what to do with the music.

A guy in our church who is a great guitarist began helping me every Wednesday for about an hour each week. Then I WAS hooked!

He told me about your site just before Christmas 2008. I have purchased Sight Reading level 1 thru 3 and level 4 thru 5. They are the most amazing books I own.

Thanks for everything. Bob A.

Never too late to enjoy playing an instrument
by: Anonymous

I was in my 70's when I decided to take up the
classical guitar. Mu Hawaiian grand-son was my
inspiration when he came to visit 3 Christmas?s ago ( At age 15 he is already a prodigy at the Ukulele).

I can read music and I started learning by myself with the help of this page, learnclassicalguitar.com, and a number of instructional books on the classical guitar.

I now play classical guitar at intermediate level as well as playing the mandolin and Baritone Ukulele.

My day is busy with practice as well as playing with small ensemble groups.

Where am I?
by: Phil

Thanks for comments to date, very useful and encouraging!

I am self taught and have been playing for nearly forty years, more seriously in the last seven or eight.

I work in IT and have got very bored with it all and I'm considering a career in Guitar playing. But I don't really know where I am regarding competency etc.

Can any of you suggest what I should do to find out where I am? Do I take the grades? approach a tutor? visit a school/college/university?

I welcome your comments and advise.

Regards,
Phil

Well Done!
by: Trevor M

Well done Bob! You look like you've really found that special feeling that abounds among classical guitar players. I hope you keep enjoying it into the future.

And I agree, those sight reading books are excellent. They've helped both me and many of my students in the past.

Kind regards,
Trevor M.

New books
by: Bob A.

Let me know what you think of the new books.

I've never owned a book that stresses reading as much. I think playing in three different positions will be a wonderful skill.

Energy
by: Bob A.

Enough energy reserve can be a problem. I've learned to get up at 6AM. I practice for an hour and then eat breakfast. I try to get another hour of practice each evening. The morning practice is always more fruitful because I'm more refreshed then. Regards, keep playing.

Wonderful!
by: Patricia

Hi Bob,

It is never too late.

Isn't it a wonderful instrument?

I play too but am still working at age 55...never seem to have enough time or energy to play as much as I want.

I celebrate your wonderful retirement hobby...there is nothing better!

Pat
