rest stroke

Is it essential to master rest stroke in order to become a good guitarist?

I would say a definite yes! It is a stroke that you definitely want to master to give your playing class, pizzazz and even oomph! :)

Seriously though, it's part of the classical tradition and plays such an important part in phrasing, melody and overall expression of so much music. It's actually indispensible in my opinion.
