My Passion

by Arja Lambrechts
(South Africa)

I grew up in a musical family and had music as a subject in school with piano as main instrument.

Thirty years ago my husband bought me a guitar and I didn’t know how to get started. Then one day I met a lady who gave classical guitar lessons. With her help and other professional teachers I started to do all the exams, up to Gr 7 and also did the theory exams.

Last year I played Trinity Guildhall’s ATCL Recital exam. Since 2005 I teach classical guitar at a school, with good results.

At the moment I have 36 pupils and really enjoy teaching them. Guitar teaching is a passion for me and it is like making my hobby my work.

Which tension strings?
by: Jonathan

Dear Sir

I've played a classical guitar casually for many years. I've never studied it; usually just play chords and songs for my own amusement.

I was in the process of adding some new strings to my guitar and found your site on a Google search re what is the best way to change strings. Your page was incredibly useful and I just wanted to thank you. You've given me some very useful tips in that regard. You're a champ! Thanks. You sound like an Aussie like me.

A couple of questions / comments:

1) I bought some Augustine strings but wasn't sure which tension. I like a round, "non-twangy" sound and got medium tension, but I'm wondering if I would've been better off with the low tension?

2) I usually rub a tiny amount of vaseline or oil onto the neck an base of the guitar before puuting on a new string, right where the string meets the guitar at each end, in the belief that this will reduce the likelihood of string breakage: am I doing anything silly there?

3) My guitar is an "Antonio Sanchez" Mod 1015. It was a present and I'm wondering where it sits on the quality scale?

Thanks for any help you can offer. Great site; hope you keep up the great work,

Cheers, Jonathan

Great Work!

If I had the money and could retire, I'd go back to school, major in music, and teach guitar.

What you did is wonderful...I admire that so much. Congratulations!

Pat
