How to know if it's Classical

by gary
(ny)

I was given a guitar and I am new to the whole thing, how do I know if it's classical or just a regular acoustic?

Hi Gary,

Claasical and plain acoustic are quite different. For instance a classical guitar has nylon strings whereas an acoustic would usually have steel strings.

The bodies are quite different too. Take a look at these pictures to see the difference...

Acoustic Guitar

Hope this helps.

How to know if its a classical
by: Anonymous

The classical guitar is lighter in weight for two main reasons: smaller overall dimension -
and no fretboard "adjustment rod" (very few will havea "rod" for adjustment).

By looking at just a photo of two look-alike acoustic guitars one with nylon strings and the other with steel strings you will see the classical with the tuning nobs facing straight back - like a horse's ears - and the steel-string instrument will have the knobs facing to the side - like elephant's ears.

Hope this will help.

The Neck?

I don't know what you call it, but when you hold the guitar, it feels more bigger compared to the acoustic guitar. When you hold the part where you play the frets, the classical guitar's one feels bigger than the acoustic guitar.

Yes, you're right. The neck of the classical guitar is usually bigger AND wider than the acoustic guitar. It's traditionally the way each guitar is made.
