Fretboard memorization

by Barry
(moore, OK, USA)

Is there a proven method for learning where the notes and equivalent notes are on the fretboard and sight read them quickly, especially in the higher positions 5th thru 9th?

Fortunately there is a method but unfortunately it really needs a bit of "elbow grease" if you know what I mean :))

Most guitar players don't put in the effort to learn the notes of the staff. It's not as easy as learning piano notes as they're all "laid out" in front of you, as it were.

Learning the notes both in a linear fashion (along each string) and each separate fret and practicing that over and over until memorized is the best way.

You can, however, make it more "fun" if you use things like "flash cards". You can get a free set here...

If you also google the term "software for learning guitar fretboard" that'll turn up some interestnig alternatives as well.

I hope this was of help.

Kind regards,
Trevor M.
