I am starting from absolute scratch. I know some musical notation but it is very shaky. I have looked at the lessons for beginners and I am embarrassed to say I don’t know how to start.

Do you have something like a key to show me what string to hit for the notes? Are there charts that I can use to show me which one is which? Thank you for your help and I am really excited about learning Classical Guitar and playing the songs to my two kids!

Hi Cory,

You might want to look at the page about learning the fretboard as it might help you re: "a key to show me what string to hit for the notes?"

Also, getting a good beginners book will help you. I'd like to suggest a beginners book which is basically for kids but it will give you a way to "ease" yourself into classical guitar AND a way to start to teach them when you've gone a little further down the "classical guitar road", as it were.

The book is New Dimensions in Classical Guitar for Children by Sonia Michelson. When you've worked your way through that I'd recommend you get Pumping Nylon by Scott Tennant. This book will give some good groundwork for playing classical guitar.

I hope this has been of help.

Kind regards,
Trevor M.

Another good book for starting out is the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method, Volume 1.

You can get this on amazon.com or on many other sites.

Congratulations on choosing a wonderful new pasttime! You will be greatly rewarded as you study more and more.

Correction:In my previous comment I mention the term Pumping Iron when I should have written Pumping Nylon.

Scott Tennant also has a Basic Classical Guitar Method (with CD) published by Alfred www.alfred.com). This book is more basic than Pumping Nylon and very similar in content to the Brett Duncan book.

I have used the Tennant's volumes as a beginner but if I were to be select a single instructor to
teach a beginner I will go for the two volumes -Tutors for guitar-of Debbie Cracknell books.(Oxford University Press).

Another good introduction to the CG for new beginners is:"Progressive Beginner Classical Guitar" (with CD/DVD)by Brett Duncan.

Another very good beginner's tutor is:
Enjoy Playing The Guitar (fist steps in playing classical guitar)Books 1 and 2 by Debby Cracknell
(Oxford University Press)

In my personal experience as a self-tought CG student "Pumping Nylon" is a little too advance for
a brand-new beginner player. The volumes listed above will provide a good foundation to move into
"Pumping Iron".
